Bereits seit 2005 ist Dr. Kurt Hammerschmidt leitender Wissenschaftler in der Abteilung Kognitive Ethologie in Göttingen. Nach dem Studium der Biologie und Informatik promovierte er 1991 in Zoologie am Institut für Verhaltensbiologie der FU Berlin. Forschung und Lehre im Bereich der Verhaltensbiologie mit den Schwerpunkten Kommunikation und Kognition sind seither der Schwerpunkt seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit. Unzählige Artikel zu diesen Themen hat Kurt Hammerschmidt bereits publiziert. „Tiere zu beobachten und Ansätze zu entwickeln, mehr von ihren Vorstellungen über ihre Umwelt zu verstehen“, das fasziniert Hammerschmidt besonders an seinem Fachgebiet. Ein besonderes Interesse hegt er für Meeressäuger und Primaten.
Als Dozent an der ATN vermittelt er den Schülern Verständnis über Tierverhalten und wie wissenschaftliche Aussagen dazu zustandekommen. „Neben dem fachspezifischen Wissen möchte ich die Schüler dazu befähigen Aussagen kritisch auf ihre Begründetheit zu hinterfragen.“
